is the perfect representation of ’80s-era speed metal. Even the group’s logo, its thick crimson letters peaked with jagged edges, remains quintessential ’80s. The Church has had several leaders over the past two decades, and its members have changed over time, but the music remains the same. Founding member David Wayne, known to seasoned fans as “the Reverend,” employed a vocal style — crisp, sometimes pinched, with a cliched tendency to suddenly turn falsetto — that others have emulated since his departure. On Thursday, July 1, Whiskey Bill’s will host the group’s latest lineup, which features frontman Ronny Munroe and the melodious double bass drum ferocity Metal parishioners have come to love.
