The new recording by Rhythm Angels Celeste Krenz and Rebecca Folsom — the subject of a Friday, January 16, CD-release party at the Boulder Theater co-starring Jessi Colter — has a Colorado flavor thanks to tunesmithing help from Liz Barnez and John Magnie. Still, the focus remains on the central twosome, whose qualities cohere nicely. Although Krenz has tended toward vaporousness on recent releases, the blues-loving Folsom toughens her up on the standout track “If I Had a Gun,” whose homicidal lyrics increase in effectiveness thanks to the chilling calm of their delivery. The other cuts aren’t quite as distinctive, but they’re consistently lovely and occasionally a bit sly — especially the Willie Dixon cover “29 Ways.” These very different Angels bring out the best in each other.
