Robert Schneider has had a year that actually kept up with his head-spinning hyperactivity. Besides releasing 010, the raw, compelling debut by his new group, Ulysses, he recorded a new disc by Marbles, his perennial solo project. Set for release later this month, the expo is a synth-driven, pupil-dilating dose of kaleidoscope pop and sleek new wave that recalls ELO as plugged into Gary Numan. The disc was mixed by Mark Linett, who also worked on Brian Wilson's resuscitated Smile -- incidentally, one of the blueprints for Schneider's own giddy, expansive harmonization. And while the songster's day gig, the celebrated ex-Denver outfit the Apples in Stereo, is on hiatus, he's gracing his old town with a free in-store appearance tonight at 7 p.m. With Schneider's effusive presence and knack for elastic tunes, it ought to be spazz-tastic.
