To give you an idea of what you’re in for on Steve Son, Denver fixture Jinx Jones writes on the liner notes, “This CD is not a collection of songs that sound alike, but a continuing story that spans forty years of experience.” Steve Son once fronted the rockabilly act Steve Son & the Sundogs, so it’s no surprise that there are a few rockabilly cuts on the fifteen-track album (“I Don’t Like Cryin’,” “You Will Never Have a Love Like Mine”). But Son also explores a wide palette of colors on the disc. Gary England plays every single instrument here, save for drums on one song, and he and Son get into some ’60s psych-rock before delving into a few country numbers. Through it all, Son throws a bit of twang into his vocals, even on the soulful “You Left Me,” which recalls Brenton Wood’s “The Oogum Boogum Song.”
