Shoegazer? Not exactly. During Sybris's first show in its native Chicago two years ago, lead singer and guitarist Angela Mullenhour got so excited that one of her shoes flew off into the crowd. Likewise, the young quartet's eponymous debut -- recently released on the Flameshovel imprint, home to fellow art-pop acts such as Chin Up Chin Up and Make Believe -- kicks fresh plasma and a robust dose of rock bombast into the saggy old genre. Akin to early Smashing Pumpkins, Lush and Juju-era Siouxsie, Sybris isn't afraid to ratchet up the tempo and volume, ranging in mood from buoyant to wistful to pissed. Sybris will take the Larimer stage tonight following local hardcore and metal outfits Dartanian, the Mutiny and Adai. While not quite as loud and heavy as the openers, Mullenhour and company should be able to go toe to toe. That is, if they can keep their shoes on.
