is taking peeps to school. The DJ and Future Jazz Project drummer launchedSound College
a couple of weeks ago at La Rumba with that idea in mind. Every Wednesday, the theme focuses on a different style of music; the concept is to explore funk, hip-hop, soundtracks and classic soul, among others, from the inside out.
“I want this to be something that changes the city in a way that’s good for everybody,” Hines explains.
This Wednesday, February 28, Sound College conducts a tribute to Black History Month, with Hines spinning cuts by groups like Public Enemy, Brand Nubian, James Brown, X-Clan and Fela Kuti. The following Wednesday, March 7, Hines will bring in six local artists, three DJs and a full band for a live mixtape show. In the coming months, Sound College plans to host the likes of Dwele, Slum Village and Bahamadia for live performances.
Up north, meanwhile, there’s a new joint that caters to country and allegedly boasts the biggest dance floor in Denver. To test the validity of that claim, stop by the Electric Cowboy in Westminster (8811 Harlan Street) this Thursday, February 22.
