5. "Stacey's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne Film: Fast Times At Ridgemont High In determining this list, loyalty to the idea of the film is much more important than loyalty to the plot. You can't cram a two-hour movie into a four-minute video, but you can convey the same feeling. And "Stacey's Mom" gets the feeling, culminating (ahem) in Rachel Hunter's recreation of the most famous masturbation scene in film history.
4. "Last Cup of Sorrow" by Faith No More Film: Vertigo We just said you can't cram an entire feature film into a music video, but this one makes a run at it. And because they used such an iconic film for their source material, they were able to cherry-pick pivotal visuals from the movie and make a video that builds the feeling pretty well.
3. "6 Foot 7 Foot" by Lil Wayne Film: Inception Not much to do with the movie, really, but has there ever been a better film metaphor for the insane, layer upon layer, reality/fantasy/reality world of Lil Wayne's music? Hype Williams basically decided he was just going to literally bring the video to life (in many cases, line-for-line) and let the people glossing over lyrics actually see what Wayne is saying. It's a dazzling experience.
2. "Watch for the Hook" by Dungeon Family Film: Reservoir Dogs One of the best posse movies ever makes the perfect backdrop for one of the best rap posses ever. As a side note, can you imagine how huge a Dungeon Family reunion would be today? There are thousands of kids out there singing "Fuck You" with no idea that this is possible. Oh, man. Until that time, we can just remember the good times with this, the second-best movie music video ever.
1. "Oh Father" by Madonna Film: Citizen Kane Other Madonna videos are more impressive movie homages (notably the Metropolis-inspired "Express Yourself" video, which we understand you might think belongs in this spot), but this one is just too perfect -- the parallel to Madonna's actual life story makes the whole deadbeat-dad thing poignant. For our money, this is the best performance Madonna ever put into a music video, and there is considerable competition. Bonus points for having the balls to use arguably the greatest film ever as your jumping-off point.
