Oh, sure, profane, sexually explicit hip-hop is nothing new. Peaches made the most ridiculous extreme of that type of thing artistically respectable — even confrontational and political. Yo, Majesty! isn’t content to be a mere curiosity either. The primary aesthetic of this act is hip-hop, but a more than cursory listen of its songs reveals a group crafting a true hybrid of musical styles. Mating haunting electronica with punk’s unapologetic defiance of mainstream culture, Majesty! turns false standards of what constitutes the good on its head. Much has been made of the sexuality of Shunda K and Jwl B, but this duo does not limit itself to such a narrow vision of songwriting. A famously powerful live act, Yo, Majesty! has an exhilarating show to offer anyone who shows up, not just the converted.
