Zome’s work with the Diamond Boiz is typically marked by hard rhymes and heavy beats. On his latest solo effort, Z-Funk Era, the MC showcases a completely different side of his production and rap prowess. The rhythmic vocal structures found in his carefully crafted samples bolster his rapid rapping style and feel-good lyrics. At first it might seem as though Zome is in over his head with such a ’70s disco and funk feel, but tracks like “When Times Are Hard” and “Fly Funk” show off his assertive lyrics while he offers up a fresh take on those musical styles for a new generation. Z-Funk is different from what you’re used to hearing from the Diamond Boiz, but in this case, change is good. Very good, even.
