Buttoned Up: McGovern for Queens

Write your own punchline.

Editor's note: To get you in the mood for ballot-casting, The Latest Word is kicking off each weekday between now and the November 4 election with Buttoned Up, a look at political buttons from my family's extensive collection...

Frankly, I have no idea to what this button presumably promoting the doomed 1972 presidential candidacy of South Dakota Senator George McGovern refers. The New York borough? The subculture? The head of the British royal family? Whatever the case, queens everywhere were no doubt pleased to know that McGovern was in their corner. -- Michael Roberts
