Colorado Crimes: Arrest of suspect in Geneva Street shooting

There was more action involving the Aurora Police Department this weekend beyond the officer-involved shooting noted in this earlier blog. Corey Ray Albat, 21, who was being held in Hays, Kansas, on an unrelated warrant, has been arrested on a first-degree-murder charge related to a shooting that took place at the 500 block of Geneva Street shortly after midnight on May 9.

NATURE: Police Arrest Suspect in Geneva Street Shooting

Aurora, CO - Aurora Police are announcing the arrest of a homicide suspect wanted in connection with a deadly shooting that took the life of a man during the early morning hours of May 9, 2009.

The suspect identified by Police - Corey Ray Albat, DOB: 01/01/1988 -- was arrested in Hays, Kansas on an unrelated arrest warrant after the shooting took place. While in jail on the no-bond narcotics warrant, Major Crimes Unit/Homicide detectives obtained a no-bond arrest warrant for Albat for Murder in the First Degree.

A photo of Albat is not being released at this time so that investigators can continue to use his photo for investigative purposes. MCU detectives request that should a photo of Albat be obtained from any source that it not be broadcast or posted to websites until such time as it is released by the Aurora Police Department.

Albat will be extradited to Colorado to appear in Arapahoe County Court to face charges.

The victim's identity is not being released at this time.

Information Previously Released on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 8:53am

On Saturday, May 9, 2009, shortly after midnight, Aurora Police officers were responded to the 500 block of Geneva Street on a report of an assault with a gun.

Officers arrived and found a man inside a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, who appears to be in his 20's, was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Major Crime/Homicide Unit and the Crime Scene Investigation Unit were notified and responded to the scene to conduct the homicide investigation.

Preliminary information indicates that a possible argument occurred between the victim and the suspect prior to the shooting. Detectives do not believe this incident is gang related. Detectives are following up on and seeking additional leads in this case.

The identity of the victim is not being released at this time pending positive identification by the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office and notification of next of kin.
