Colorado has responded to the shooting death of mother Renee Nicole Good with protests and rallies, including one scheduled for tomorrow, January 9, at the Colorado State Capitol Building.
On January 7, Good was shot and killed in Minneapolis by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while in her SUV. A 37-year-old mother of three, Good was originally from Colorado, according to her family members, some of whom still reside in the state.
In a video circulating online, Good’s red Honda Pilot can be seen blocking a road before ICE agents approach and tell her to get out, even pulling at the door handle. After the Honda backs up and then accelerates forward, at least two gunshots are heard, and the car crashes into a parked car down the street. Good was later identified as the deceased driver, with an ICE agent marked as the shooter.
See information on anti-ICE protests in solidarity with Good below, including one in Denver and another outside of an ICE detention center.
Where Is the Denver Protest?
According to posts on Reddit and social media, anti-ICE protesters plan to rally at the Colorado State Capitol’s west steps and lawn, located at the intersection of Lincoln and Colfax Avenues. Immigration activist (and recent ICE detainee) Jeanette Vizguerra will participate and speak at the gathering, according to organizers.
When Is the Denver Protest?
There is currently no permit filed for a protest at the Capitol on January 9, but organizers still plan to hold what they describe as an “emergency protest” in solidarity with Good. According to the flyer, the rally will start at 6 p.m., with no designated end time.
Will There Be a March?
There are no mentions of a march on the flyer for the anti-ICE protest on January 9, but marches have formed during previous protests at the Capitol, including one on Saturday, January 3, when protesters decried the United States’ invasion of Venezuela.
The majority of marches during Denver protests have gone south, onto Broadway and toward Interstate 25, or west on Colfax and into downtown.
What’s Happened Since Good’s Death?
The Department of Homeland Security, the parent agency for ICE, is calling Good’s driving “an act of domestic terrorism,” claiming the ICE agent was acting in self-defense. Both Minnesota’s governor and the mayor of Minneapolis have denounced Homeland Security’s claims.
Governor Jared Polis issued a statement on Wednesday night highlighting Good’s ties to Colorado and calling for an investigation.
“What took place in a Minneapolis neighborhood is deeply disturbing, and the loss of Renee Good is tragic,” Polis said. “My thoughts are with Renee’s family, especially her young child, friends, and loved ones including those in Colorado. There must be a full investigation into this incident, and accountability. The American people deserve answers about what happened today.”
The Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition called Good’s death “murder” in a statement denouncing violence by ICE.
“The violent suppression of peaceful protesters in Durango and the killing of a woman in Minneapolis makes it unequivocally clear,” CIRC spokesperson Karen Orona said. “The state intends to operate without witnesses or opposition.”
Other Efforts for Renee Good
Another protest will take place in front of the ICE offices in Centennial, 12445 East Caley Avenue, on Sunday, January 11, at 9 a.m.
