Reader support matters more than ever
We're in the final stretch of our summer campaign. Our goal is to raise $25,000 by August 9 to support the journalism our community relies on. Reader support is helping shape the future of local news.
Governor Bill Ritter’s continued success at turning friends into foes has caused even some supporters to doubt his political aptitude — but no one questions Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper’s talents in this area. Today’s front-page story in the Denver Post, about his disinterest in offering Ritter a primary challenge, showcases those skills. By publicly rebuffing entreaties by unnamed “influential” interests, he establishes his loyalty to the Democratic Party apparatus even as he polishes his reputation as the most promising member of the Dem bullpen. It’s a masterstroke of the sort that seems beyond Ritter these days.
