More irony in news that the falling 2009 murder rate in Denver. This is the seventh blog we'll publish today about a homicide in the metro area since December 22 -- and the crime at the heart of this item is the second slaying to have taken place within the Denver city limits since the new year dawned.
The Denver Police Department says the incident took place on January 3 amid a party on the 400 block of Utica Street, an area captured in the graphic above (if you have problems seeing the image, click "View Larger Map"). Neither the victim nor the perpetrator have been identified thus far, but the cause of death has been: stabbing. Look below for the latest from the DPD:
On January 3, 2010, at approximately 2:20 a.m., Denver Police received a call regarding a stabbing in the area of 4th Avenue and Utica Street. Denver Police Officers responded to the area and located a male victim in the 400 block of Tennyson Street. The victim appeared to be suffering from stab wounds and was transported to Denver Health Medical Center where he died just before noon. Through the investigation it was learned that the victim was at a party in the 400 block of Utica Street. The party was disbursed and while outside the victim was involved in a physical altercation with another individual in which the victim was stabbed. The unidentified suspect fled the scene. This incident is being investigated as a homicide.
The exact cause of death and the victim's identity are pending the results of the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

Update, 3:51 p.m.: A thus-far-unnamed seventeen-year old has been arrested in relation to this incident. Here's the latest DPD release:
On January 3, 2010, Denver Police arrested a 17-year-old male in connection with the homicide that occurred at 4th Avenue and Utica Street. Members of the Denver Police Department arrested the juvenile male suspect at his Denver home without incident. He is currently being held for investigation of First Degree Murder. Due to the fact that the suspect is a juvenile his identity will not be released at this time.
