On Sunday, June 22, a mob of around 300 teenagers invaded The Shops at Northfield, fighting one another inside and outside of its stores and creating multiple disturbances. The young people had organized the melee online via videos on TikTok, and more "takeovers" were advertised for coming weeks, including gatherings at Elitch Gardens, Lakeside Amusement Park and Aurora's Town Center this weekend.

So far, though, there have been no reports of these takeovers occurring. But concerns over the initial incident continue — as do discussions of the root causes of the teen takover, as evidenced in comments on the Westword Facebook post of the story. Says Tahnee:
Not sure what people expected when you give kids no hope for a future. They have nothing to lose and may as well raise hell!
Adds Matt:
Lots of rotten parents out there.
Responds Alesia:
Maybe community leaders could step up, take the reins and organize get-togethers (in lieu of takeovers) for the teens.
Suggests Michael:
They should've called them be-ins instead of takeovers. Maybe they can get a do-over. Kids are finally back at the mall, but the malls have been empty so long they don't know how to capture them as paying customers. Missed opportunity.
Says Chris:
Sounds like Denver needs to reopen the juvenile detention center in Golden. In the '70s, all kids were scared of being sent to the mountain.
Adds James:
They need to meet up with some tough cops and spend some nights in individual cells.
Comments Lola:
There are too many of them. And these kids are old enough to know better. At this point, I don’t give a shit what their problem is. They don’t need to take it out on innocent people! I didn’t raise them. I don’t need them ruining my shit.
Counters Jailyn:
It’s really obvious how much so many of y’all don’t like kids and would sooner lock them up than actually try try to figure out what’s going on and find out how you can support them.
Concludes Ambriz:
It's like people forget they were teenagers as well: Every different generation deals with different problems.
