Twenty new Colorado laws took effect January 1. The arguments started long before that.

On January 1, twenty new state laws passed by the Colorado Legislature during its 2025 session took effect; they affect everything from food trucks and firearm sellers to insurance coverage for abortion and mental health services. And bison!

Hannah Metzger recently took a look at ten of these new laws. And in their comments on the Westword Facebook post of her report, readers showed that there’s no new law requiring careful reading…or civil discourse. Says Jeffrey:

So, the state with the most laws wins? Americans have forgotten the value of liberty.

Suggests Monty:

Legal system in Colorado is a joke. So a new law is just another law I probably won’t obey.

All of these seem to be very common sense and not controversial at all. Most of them are aimed at protecting wildlife and other things that benefit all Coloradans.Transparent pricing, livable minimum wage, rent protection, expanded mental health coverage. What is so difficult to understand? It’s government working for average people and not just giving tax cuts to the super wealthy. You prefer tax dollars going for stupid military operations? Trump’s weekend golf trips? Tax breaks for corporations? WTF is wrong with you people?

Responds Todd:

These all sound like very Colorado like laws for a very corrupt state.

Try nineteen of them, but honestly who gives a shit anymore? Stay six feet away from me and mind your own business or we will all learn, won’t we?

Suggests Frank:

More nanny state shit.

Here you are with more crybaby shit. They made laws that are good for small businesses, renters, consumers, workers and bison. Cry more, buddy, it won’t change a thing. That list is what it looks like when a state legislature is focused on caring for people, not forcing political trends on everyone. Very impressive.

Concludes Lindsay:

Love all of this.
