Reader: Denver's Just Pushing Homelessness Into Other Towns

Mayor Mike Johnston claims that Denver is halfway to reaching his goal of solving unsheltered homelessness, citing the latest Point in Time data, an annual count of homeless residents in shelters and on the streets, released on June 9.

"At the halfway point in the administration, we're halfway towards the goal," says Cole Chandler, the mayor's senior advisor on homelessness resolution. "The mayor set a bold goal to end street homelessness in his first term, and so we feel great that at the halfway point, we're halfway there."

Despite criticism, the mayor doubled down on his claim this week...but the comments keep coming on the Westword Facebook page of the news. Says Nick:
It's halfway solved: He closes one eye when he looks out the window.
Adds Anthony:
Halfway solved? This is laughable.
Suggests Dakota:
Drive down Colfax between 6 and 8 a.m. and get back to me.
Notes James:
Halfway is a good start! I think homeless programs were like $57.5 million and migrant assistance $90 million. Only a $200 million deficit. Let's double these programs and solve this issue. The deficit will only be $350 million and we can cover that by cutting schools and more city workers. Those are doing great and are not needed. Welfare state now!
Offers Lydia:
He's just pushing the homeless out of Denver to other towns. Lakewood is terrible. I was at Fort Logan Cemetery and had a lovely view of a homeless camp through the fence. Johnston is an idiot with his lies.
Concludes Geoia:
I love it that the majority of comments on Westword, the most left-leaning publication, call BS on Mayor Johnston and his administration. Denverites are waking up. Recall this stooge or, at best, elect someone better next election...although it's going to take a superhero to fix the devastation he's created in Denver.
