Travis Tyler Fluck first took shrooms when he was fifteen. He immediately knew he’d found his muse, and taught himself to cultivate the fungi. “I learned a very rudimentary technique,” he says.“That way I could get mushrooms when I wanted them.” Thanks to Fluck and other activists, Colorado voters passed Proposition 122 in 2022, which will soon allow people to get mushrooms in this state..if they jump through a few legal hoops.

By then, Fluck had earned a certificate of completion from the International End of Life Doula Association; he's now one of a burgeoning number of psychedelic death doulas who facilitate psilocybin therapy for patients with terminal illnesses. “We’ve become estranged from nature," he notes, "and because of that, we have so much apprehension around dying because we don’t have the direct perception that something about us goes on."

In their comments on the Westword Facebook and Instagram posts on the story of Fluck and other death doulas, readers offer very different perceptions of his service. Says Rebecca:
Wish my mom had this resource when she was sick.
Adds Theresa:
This is compassionate care.
Counters George:
Sounds like wook science, but okay.
Offers Joshua:
Psychedelics do not “unlock the doors of perception,” they alter perception and cause hallucinations. They do not give anyone supernatural senses or perceive any kind of hidden world.
Responds Alissa:
In essence, altering perception does allow you to perceive previously hidden worlds. That’s almost the definition of a different perception.
Adds Margrit:
Perception is not objective; it's subjective and influenced by individual differences in beliefs and experiences. This means that two people in the same situation might perceive it differently due to their unique belief systems.
Admits MileHighCholo:
I’m afraid of the end of my story. I think everyone is. Making peace with your ego? Seems like perfect therapy.
Concludes Marcial:
The beginning is still here while we wait for death to get closer than near. F death, try life is much more challenging and rewarding. Take the shrooms to get to the next level like mario, not to wait for the goomba to kill you off eventually.
