The top level of a parking garage in south Denver turned into one scary scene on Monday, March 23, when the floor cracked and collapsed under the multiple cars.

The garage served the building at 3600 South Yosemite Street. According to the Denver Fire Department, “multiple crews” are on the scene. There have been no reported casualties or injuries, DFD adds.

“It sounded like construction, like somebody dropped something on a concrete floor,” says Curtis Bailey, who works on the eighth floor of the building. “About three minutes later, the fire alarms went off; we didn’t even know the parking structure collapsed until we got outside.”

There were two cars that “were really damaged,” DFD operations chief Robert Murphy says, but inspectors have made sure no one was in the vehicles and have contacted their owners.

Emergency responders are still on the scene. According to Murphy, “it will be a while before anyone can get in there” and retrieve their vehicles or other belongings.

“[Vehicle owners] are going to have to wait a bit,” he says. “That’s the job now that we know nobody is in there; they’ll have to have to get some structural engineers to come in and assess the scene.”

Esmelyn Espinal, who also works in the building, says he heard a loud noise around the same time of the collapse.

“I was working at my computer and heard a thump. It sounded like somebody dropped something,” Espinal describes. “And then I heard an alarm. …They said by tomorrow they’ll assess the situation and let us know [if we can get our cars out].”

According to city records, the building is owned by KAS Yosemite LLC, a Miami-based company.
