But some residents complain that there's no water on the ground — or in the fountains.

Denver has one of the country's best park systems for a big city, according to the Trust for Public Land, a nonprofit that published its annual ParkScore index on May 21. Among the country's 100 most populated cities, Denver has the tenth- best park system in 2025, up three spots from the TPL rankings last year.

Denver had more than 500 parks scored in its ParkScore ranking, highlighted by large neighborhood parks like Washington, City and Sloan's Lake parks; the city is also poised to reopen the Park Hill Golf Course as a public open space and park this summer, which should boost the city's score in the future, according to Jim Petterson, vice president of the TPL Mountain West Region.

But the city has plenty of smaller projects to be proud of across town. "We're seeing investments of all kinds from little pocket parks in Westwood to wholesale park renovations and future parks," Petterson says. "All of that is adding up to being among the best in the country."

But finding agreement in the comments posted on the Westword Facebook page is no walk in the park. Says Ciara:
Anyone with kids knows that the park system here is amazing. I can’t wait for Park Hill to open.
Wonders Mark:
Is this with or without the flowers that Denver can’t afford to plant?
Offers Christopher:
Our parks look horrible. They don’t water enough, trees are dying, and they don’t remove weeds.
Notes Richard:
And like 30 percent of the drinking water fountains actually work in our parks. It's so difficult to find water at our parks during the summer
Adds Juan:
Every park I've gone to here in Colorado always has no water at the fountains, and bathrooms are always chained and locked.
Counters Kathy:
I moved here from Albuquerque, so I'm quite impressed with all of the parks.
Says Althea:
Agreed! We love being right next to Cheesman Park!
Adds Sten:
Sloans is better.
Responds Lazer:
I lived near Central Park in NYC and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco; City Park isn’t close, but we have a lot of smaller parks that are nice, too. Still not there.
