The marriage and the rise of "info-snacking"

Denver-based gazillionaire Phil Anschutz is an unusual fellow. He's a media mogul, with interests in traditional print as well as online operations, but he refuses to give interviews, and many of his firms, including Clarity Digital Group, overseer of the sprawling project, don't even have proper websites. That's the equivalent of Henry Ford insisting on traveling only by mule train.

Even so, Anschutz is aggressively expanding operations in the new-media world, with his latest acquisition being NowPublic, a Vancouver firm that employs pretty much the same citizen-journalism model as -- using average folks, most without traditional journalism training, to produce content. Whether this material constitutes actual news varies from item to item. Indeed, the piece on the purchase refers to the concept as "online 'info-snacking,'" which is as good a description as any, if not necessarily the most positive one imaginable. The results are certainly impressive from a numerical standpoint: The tidbit linked above notes that a July survey by comScore showed that the operation had "more unique visitors than Huffington Post, not to mention NPR and the Drudge Report combined (17 million unique visitors every month)." The NowPublic deal is meant to supplement and solidify those totals in the hope that news consumers who've previously been served complete meals will be satisfied with low-calorie bites from here on out.
