A spot where you can see a dude rapping to himself at the bus stop, a hooker walking in heels stumbling past the furniture rental place, and a drunk pissing himself while half-passed out after bumming for change and downing a bottle of cheap gin from Scooter Liquors."

I can think of a few in Denver off the top of my head, including one at the corner of 11th and Lincoln, where dance clubs, mescal bars and wanna-be hipster hangouts have burned out within a year, if not a few months. Similarly, over the last five years, I've seen the same thing happen in the medical marijuana world in Denver, at the South Broadway storefront currently occupied by the Green Depot. But this center may have finally found the formula for breaking the curse."

The new owners have changed up as much as they can, but a few things remain the same, including the shared entrance with the tattoo parlor next door. The girl working the counter of the tattoo parlor looked up from her magazine, sizing me up. I cut her glare short by making a turn to the right into the dispensary lobby instead of to the left and into her shop."

An excerpt from William Breathes's March 2013 review: "The shop is clean and really, really upscale, with wide-plank hardwood floors and clean, molding-topped tan walls uncluttered with pot posters and product advertisements. Walking in off the street puts you in the lobby and waiting area, right in front of a sharp-dressed secretary sitting behind a large computer desk. It could easily pass for a Cherry Creek real-estate office or an empty art gallery waiting to hang the next show. The dark-wood floors and high ceilings inside the old building give it an echoing, empty feeling at first, but the bright sunshine pouring in from the western-facing front windows and mellow electronic music give the place some life."

Patients Choice has hung its shingle on an industrial stretch of South Broadway teeming with fast-food joints and auto dealers. Inside, however, it's like a whole different world, with a soothing green paint scheme, natural wood touches and tasteful floral arrangements. Like we suggested, it could pass for an admissions office -- especially since, like universities, prospects need to schedule an in-depth tour of the operation before they're allowed to become a medicated BMOC."

An excerpt from William Breathes's March 2013 review: "Get through the locked door to the bud bar and you're hit with a wave of hot, wet air -- like getting off a plane in Florida or walking into the Denver Botanic Gardens in February. Rounding the corner, it's clear what's causing the artificial season change: a massive closet packed with rooted clones in various stages of growth."

An excerpt from William Breathes's April 2013 MMD of Colorado review: "Most of the time, I find dispensaries from friend suggestions. This time, it was Google maps -- more specifically, a street-view image of a hippie walking out of the dispensary and clearly being surprised to see the Googlemobile. Pan to the northeast a frame, and homie is flipping the camera the bird. That doesn't really have anything do with MMD, but it was reason enough for me to stop by -- just to get a look at where Bird Man was caught on candid Internet camera."

An excerpt from William Breathes's September 2011 review: "The waiting room was a small, clean affair, with naturally stained bamboo floors, a neutral gray tone on the walls and smooth birch moldings around the teller window and door frame leading back to the bud bar. I handed my card to the woman behind the counter and took a seat in one of the ostrich-skinned leather chairs to fill out the three or so pages of forms. While not the first wild-game pelt I've sat on in a dispensary, ostrich is probably the most extravagant."

An excerpt from William Breathes's June 2012 re-review: "Just walking from my parking spot across the heat-radiating pavement of Larimer Street made my T-shirt stick to my chest with sweat. I almost turned around when I first hit the waiting room up front and found it was only slightly cooler than outside. Two people waiting for friends buying bud inside looked like half-melted snowmen lumped into the chairs lining the walls. But behind the safety glass of the window, a receptionist was sitting in temperature-controlled bliss. Cold air blew through the hole where I handed her my card."

There's still a few vacant storefronts, so parking wasn't an issue even during rush hour. Employees should probably change the dispensaries carbon filters, because the smell of fresh cannabis being grown did more to lead me to the shop's back-corner location than the huge "Bud Cellar" sign hanging over the liquor store did."

Other touches, like leaving the wooden ceiling beams exposed and using stained concrete as flooring are in keeping with the industrial-turned-residential feel of the neighborhood."

It's across the street from the Uptown Tavern, which coincidentally has a mini-bowling alley that is ridiculously fun to play when ripped on a good sativa, not to mention a well-ventilated patio. But I digress..."

In the corners of the room were tiny ship models, in case you didn't get that you're leaving Denver for a tropical oasis by the sign out front along strip-centric East Evans Avenue."

An excerpt from William Breathes's January 2013 review: "Minus the cop chopper thrown in for humor, New Broadsterdam's waiting room had an appropriately Netherlands-esque thing going on, with pictures of windmills hung on the walls and other Dutch kitsch thrown around for good measure. There's also a huge, village-square-like white lattice pergola set up over the receptionist desk. It fits, though I'm not really sure about the Dutch connection on that one. The other pieces of heavy wooden antique furniture (and motorcycle) they've got sitting in the large, empty waiting room make it feel almost like one of the antique shops a few blocks north."

An excerpt from William Breathes's August 2011 review: "Natural Remedies is on the fifth floor of a turn-of-the-century building on Market Street above Sonoda's Sushi. The building has a central staircase and the smell of freshly fried tempura wafts all the way up to the fifth floor, generally overpowering the faint smell of cannabis until you get to the front door of the shop."

Due to their proximity to A-Town, the folks there really didn't need to do much more than set up a cash register and fill some jars with warehouse buds.

Instead, they've opted for a fancy weed lounge and retreat that feels more Cherry Creek than Havana Street."

But that impression faded as I rounded the corner and buzzed the doorbell that let me into the Native Roots waiting room."

They range from flags to T-shirts from the various world-renowned coffee shops and seed companies that call the Dutch city home."

A vocal proponent of the dispensary model, Carr has hosted numerous Denver City Council members and state legislators at his store. The rest of the block is equally nondescript and industrial: An auto salvage yard sits across the street, and the shop is flanked by the Talking Book warehouse on one side and a gas/fire-extinguisher-tank fabrication shop on the other. There's little drive-by traffic, let alone foot traffic, which is nice if you're still looking to be discreet about where you go for your pot."

The center is nice, though, with large old trees on the lawns of nearby industrial buildings. Aside from the green "Medicine Man" sign out front, and the neon green cross in the barred front windows, it's not a very obvious dispensary site."

An excerpt from William Breathes's October 2013 review: "The dispensary is down a steep flight of stairs from the sidewalk to the basement of the building. The dispensary takes up the entire floor, tucking patient lounges in between massive structural columns and pushing couches up against the massive painted bricks used for the foundation of the former paper mill. Much like Boulder Wellness in Boulder, the shop has gone for an Eastern Buddhist/Zen theme with low painted chairs, squatting Buddha statues and colorful framed posters with vaguely Hindu symbols. There was also a huge, seven-foot-tall antique-looking ceramic vase painted with what looked like a life-sized crane. In my head, I could see a massive cannabis tree fitting in perfectly."

An excerpt from William Breathes's July 2012 review: "DANK is basically a 400 square-foot green box with a matching leather couch and chairs set up in one corner as a lounge, and a cutout window in the opposite wall that opens into the employee-only bud room. Small, hinge-top sample jars with a few buds each are kept out on display on the counter. To the left of the bud counter is a small glass case filled with inexpensive pipes, papers and assorted marijuana ephemera."
