The sky's the limit this week. Or is it? From a discussion of the view at Coors Field to consideration of a proposed DIA expansion to conventions including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the fortieth annual international UFO Symposium, things are looking up -- way up -- in Denver.

Denver City Council will hold a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. today at the Denver City & County Building on a proposed ordinance that would restrict building heights in an area west of Coors Field, the better to protect the view of the Rockies from the ballpark.

Closer to the ground, the National Major Gang Task Force -- which moved to Pueblo from Indianapolis this year -- will start its annual training conference today at the Colorado State University Campus. This year's theme is "The Border and Beyond: Clear and Present Danger"; For info, go to www.coloradosting.org. Two high-profile trials also get under way today: the long-awaited trial of Aaron Thompson in connection with the disappearance of his daughter, and Darrell Crewswell's case in Denver District Court against Starbucks and Pepsi, which he claims withdrew a deal to let him enter into a vending-machine venture.

Tomorrow, the action moves to the Colorado Senate, where the Pinnacol interim committee will hold its first public hearing on the quasi-public workers' compensation insurer (which has sure been buying a lot of advertising lately). From 4 to 6 p.m. that day, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission will conduct a public hearing on Xcel's proposed rate hike; the hearing's in the PUC offices at 1560 Broadway, suite 250.

Finally, the Mutual UFO Network will host its fortieth anniversary UFO symposium at the Marriott Denver Tech Center this week; the four-day event, which kicks off August 6, includes dozens of out-of-this-world speakers. For a complete schedule, go to www.MUFON.com
