Dear Stoner: Why don’t I see more clones or seeds in dispensaries? They’re pretty cheap and don’t require much space. I think that could be an untapped market.

Dear Cheezy E: Colorado dispensaries can indeed sell clones and seeds – and so can a lot of other retailers, now that the federal government views clones and seeds as hemp because of their minute THC content. With clones and seeds readily available online before it was even legal, dispensaries have always been at a disadvantage, but there are plenty of other reasons why you don’t see them.
Cannabis clones aren’t expensive, but they are hard to find in dispensaries.

Most home-growers aren’t big dispensary shoppers, since their cannabis needs are typically already taken care of. Seeds are so tiny and cheap that some dispensaries still sell pouches from FreeWorld, Dark Horse and other genetics brands, but clones require a decent amount of space and electricity, so only a small number carry them. Think about it: If your entire business model was built on selling weed, why would you want to provide your customers the means to cut you out? It’d be great to see more home-growing supplies everywhere, but most dispensaries leave that up to seedbanks and expos.
