Renee Nicole Good, the woman who was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minnesota, was the mother of three and originally from Colorado.
Good, 37, was fatally shot in her car the morning of January 7, as federal immigration agents conducted a sweep in Minneapolis. Video circulating online shows a red Honda Pilot sitting in the middle of a residential road, blocking lanes in both directions. After ICE agents approach the vehicle and demand that the driver exit, one agent pulls on its door handle.
The Honda backs up for a moment, but then turns right and begins to accelerate forward, At least two gunshots are heard in the video as the Honda accelerates, and the vehicle then crashes into a parked car down the street.
Good was later identified as the driver. According to 9News and Scripps News Group, Good’s family told reporters that she was originally from the Colorado Springs area, but most recently lived in or around Kansas City. Some of her family members still live in Colorado; she and her partner reportedly had just dropped her six-year-old off at school.
Officials with ICE and the United States Department of Homeland Security confirmed that an ICE agent was responsible for the shooting, but he remains unidentified. Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLauglin claimed the ICE agent was acting in self-defense, with the department labeling Good’s driving as “an act of domestic terrorism.” Local and state officials disagree, however.
“Today, ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism,” Homeland Security said in a statement after the shooting.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey both dispute the federal government’s claims that the Honda Pilot was trying to hit agents in the video. Frey called Homeland Security’s claims “not true” during a heated press conference.
“The narrative that this was just done in self-defense is a garbage narrative,” Frey added.
In a social media post on his account, Walz said the state will “ensure there is a full, fair, and expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice,” and warned people: “Don’t believe this propaganda machine.”
ICE in Colorado
The Denver area has seen a handful of major immigration raids by ICE since President Donald Trump took office last January, and ICE has a major detention center in Aurora, with several more expected to come online across the state. Most of the immigration enforcement action has taken part in more rural parts of the state, though, and and that’s where the bulk of notable interactions between ICE agents and residents has taken place.
In September of last year, a Latina county commissioner in Routt County said ICE agents followed her to a parking lot and “boxed in” her car after she recorded their activity near Oak Creek, a town of 900 people south of Steamboat Springs. In October, an unidentified law enforcement agent put a 57-year-old woman in a chokehold and then threw her down a hill during a protest outside of an ICE field office in Durango. The FBI later announced it was investigating the incident, but hasn’t announced any findings yet.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis is asking for an investigation into the Minnesota shooting, too. “What took place in a Minneapolis neighborhood is deeply disturbing, and the loss of Renee Good is tragic,” he said in a statement. “My thoughts are with Renee’s family, especially her young child, friends, and loved ones including those in Colorado. There must be a full investigation into this incident, and accountability. The American people deserve answers about what happened.”
