Did you resolve to give up alcohol for January? For good? After a night of ringing in the new year, many people decide to abstain from alcohol for a while…but that doesn’t mean they need to give up bars.
For those observing Dry January — or giving up alcohol altogether — Abigail Bliss served up 31 spots serving all manner of mocktails this month. And in their comments on the Westword Facebook post of her list, readers served up plenty of suggestions of their own. Says Fred:
Drink, don’t drink. Just don’t tell me about it. I’m already tired of these holier-than-thou campaign that’s really all about marketing, not health.
Wonders Josh:
Who are the people who need a list of “liquids that are safe to drink that aren’t alcohol”?
Adds Aniesha:
Mocktails can be great if they are not just a lesser poison. Many syrups, energy drinks, etc. are not much healthier or worth the price. bars are just now beginning to curate quality substitutions.
Responds Malcolm:
I don’t drink anymore. Soda water is my go-to.
Offers Andrew:
NA beers for me.
Says Amy:
I love the NA menu at The Black Box! Wish more bars would take a page out of their book and offer drinks like Yerba Mate instead of those stupid Ghost energy drinks.
Suggests Jason:
I’d rather save money and smoke weed at home. Bars are too expensive, booze or not, given the corporate dystopia most of us are swimming through right now. Sixty bucks at a bar is one night drinking, sixty bucks at a dispensary can last me two weeks.
Explains Sonya:
I try not to go to bars when I do Dry January, but if I do, I’ll indulge in a NA mocktail. Otherwise, I stick to water
Responds Steve:
I just continue drinking and ignore Dry January.
Asks Eric:
Westword, do you plan to indulge in relevant journalism ever again? Or is this pretty much what we should expect moving forward?
And Steve concludes:
I read this while sipping an espresso martini.
