Broken Hops Brewing is bringing traditional lager technique to modern IPA.
Broken Hops Brewing
Beer of the Week: West Coast IPA from Broken Hops Brewing, West Coast IPA, 7 percent ABV
From the Brewery: All German hops, Weyermann malt, single decocted with a lager strain, this IPA is the German "Blind Pig."
From the Glass: Some herbal grapefruit on the nose. A firm bitterness on the tongue, with slightly dank, sticky blend of citrus, grapefruit and floral hops. Everything is very clean and elegant. It has the mouthfeel of a lager, but the hopping of a West Coast IPA. This is the flagship IPA from Chris O'Connor's Broken Hops Brewing. O'Connor is the VP of brewing operations at Prost Brewing, but runs Broken Hops as his own side project, focused on hop-forward beers. The beer is brewed on Prost's larger 50-barrel system, and a lot of the components of this beer reflect that. Smooth and easy-drinking, yet clearly packed with hop flavor and bitterness, there may not be anything quite like this in the market today.
Availability: In cans and on draft at all Prost locations. It may also be distributed in the near future.
