"They love unicorns. That's their thing. So the fact that it's called Chubby Unicorn, they had to come here. It was fate."

Scott Warnick is on a mission to make sure his daughters, Scarlett and Alice, get as much quality time with him when he has custody on Tuesdays. But instead of watching television with them or playing games, for the past six years he's taken them for Taco Tuesday dinners and turned it into a family tradition.

That tradition hit the six-year milestone on July 29 and the trio celebrated at Chubby Unicorn, a Mexican restaurant and bar next to the Mission Ballroom in the RiNo district. "It's a lot of work," Warnick says as he settled in at the table to wait for the night's meal. "But the more you do, the more it sort of motivates you to be like, what's next? What are we going to do to fill the calendar? It's the project manager in me. It's constant, I have to be pretty thorough."

One decision was an easy one to make, without dad's project management skills: The location of this special Tuesday night. "Yeah, they both girls are really, like, they love unicorns. That's their thing," Warnick says. "So the fact that it's called Chubby Unicorn, they had to come here. It was fate."

Or kismet: the restaurant could have a more typical name for a business serving Mexican food. But it's in the River North district northeast of downtown, which is shortened to RiNo. And, what are rhinoceroses? Why, chubby unicorns, of course!

The owners and staff of the restaurant were ready for the trio when they arrived, with a reserved table and extra attention. For their part, the family wore matching outfits of pink shoes and shorts with black "Taco Tuesday Legend" t-shirts that Warnick had ordered in bulk in varying sizes to accommodate the girls' growth spurts (and he joked, his growing belly). Warnick did not match his daughters' bling. They both wore dangling taco-shaped earrings.

Their meal was comped by the restaurant, though they just had their usual, nothing extravagant, that they order at every restaurant. Dad ordered his standard Tacos Al Pastor and the girls ordered chicken tacos. Afterwards, they gave a thumbs-up review of the food.

But wait, there was more: Chubby Unicorn ordered a special cake for the family from 3 Cherries on Top, a nearby bakery run by cake artist Angel Figueroa, a semifinalist on the "Dr Seuss Baking Challenge" on Prime Video. She baked a cake with exquisite detail that looked like two large, yummy tacos. The girls didn't want to ruin it by eating it (although Alice did pick at one corner when it was brought to the table). After a rousing chorus of assembled staff and diners of "Happy Sixth Annual Taco Tuesday To You," the girls blew out the candle on top of the taco-cake. Again, the reviews were thumbs-up.

The three were also videotaped by 9News for a segment in their Storytellers program, which will air next Friday, Aug. 8.

After their meal, the Chubby Unicorn ice hockey team even came and posed with the family for a photo. Dad and daughters loved the experience so much they bought Chubby Unicorn caps on their way out. The trio still have a cope of years of Taco Tuesdays left, with Scarlett now 10 and Alice 7 years old — with new places opening up, there are now 98 more restaurants to try.

Then, whenever they run out of tacos, the girls are already plotting to switch both dates and cuisines, to "Sushi Saturdays."
