For 66 years, Taco House has been a staple at 581 South Federal Boulevard, with a sign that's almost bigger than the building below it, beckoning hungry diners looking for a cheap Mexican food fix. Gerald Bevelhymer opened the place in 1958, and it's still run by the same family. For now: On December 1, Taco House announced that it will close by the end of the month, if not sooner...depending on supplies.

"Our grandfather's vision was to operate an affordable Mexican food restaurant, offering one of the first carry-out options in Denver," reads the closure announcement. "In the 1970s, Taco House boasted eleven locations in the metro area." Only one other family-owned spot remains, at 1335 Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood, which will remain open "for the foreseeable future."

There's also a Taco House in Littleton; it's under separate ownership, but notes: "We’re all in the same boat and why I always insist that we support local small businesses. We have a meeting at the end of the month to figure everything out."

In the meantime, regulars shared memories of the original Taco House on the Westword Facebook page. Says Marie:
End of an era.
Adds Sharon:
I have been going there for 49 years and would still be going there if they would stay open.
Laments Ryan:
Dammit, all I wanted to do was take a first date there. Never found that special one in time.
Responds Lukario:
It reminds me of my ex, so I'm not going to miss it, just like her.
Recalls Maggie:
I ate there almost every Friday night as a kid. The Dinner #4 was $1.25 for three cheese enchiladas and three tostadas - guacamole, bean, queso. They had the hot sauce in small jars and it was GOOD!
Replies Shirlee:
This place was yummy, although they changed almost fifteen years ago and the food wasn't as authentic.
Adds Antonio:
It's about time! Cheap garbage.

Says Scott:
Oh, noooo. I worked at the one on Havana in Aurora. I loved the food!!!
Adds Cindy:
I still go to the one in Littleton. Number 4 with onions!! It’s the best, not as cheap as it used to be, but I still love it!!
Recalls Kimberlee:
We used to go to the one on West Colfax for a Burrada. We ate there because it was cheap for teenagers.
Concludes Brent:
They are killing everything I grew up with and they don't care about my neighborhood. I have eaten at this restaurant since I was a young boy.
