Gordo's, that longstanding Mexican joint that stood over Sixth Avenue at Sheridan for decades, recently closed up that location and started serving at a new spot -- with a new name. The 44th Avenue Grill, at 44th and Wadsworth in Lakewood, is acting as a satellite location of Gordo's -- serving Gordo's food and retaining the old staff -- while the old location is prepped for demolition. It will ultimately be rebuilt as a new, improved Gordo's.
The new, not-quite Gordo's, which is housed in what used to be Vern's Restaurant & Lounge, is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call 303-421-4544.
Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Denver with no paywalls.
