The South is rising again at Saucy, which opened for business on January 25 at 2200 Market Street (the former home ofOtto's Grill and, before that, the downtown Brix
But Saucy wants to do more than serve up traditional Southern cuisine, according to Isaac Torres, part-owner of the restaurant with his father, Raul. They also want to serve up a heaping helping of Southern tradition. "That's our roots," explains Torres. "We grew up Southern and we don't show that with just the food, we want the hospitality. We want to be a mom-and-pop where everyone knows you by name."
Saucy definitely has the mom-and-pop thing down, as the whole family is helping to run the restaurant -- and they're putting in plenty of hours doing it. But as they start to attract regulars, their efforts are rewarded. "It's not getting people in here, it's getting them to come back," notes part-owner Corey Edwards. "We have had people come in four or five times already, only in a week."
The repeats enjoy not just Southern hospitality, but sizable portions. "The wings come with twelve where you usually only get six," Edwards says, "and the nachos have to go out in pizza boxes for to-go-orders." Saucy also offers big sandwiches -- a beef Angus burger, chicken sandwich, barbeque sandwiches -- and a favorites menu that's "like appetizers but with bigger portions," he adds.
"Some of it's just comfort-food home-style, like mac-n-cheese, beans and potato salad and meat, and the sauces are old recipes," Torres explains. "We kind of looked and saw what other people had and made sure we put other things on the menu."
And Torres cooks them up. "The reason I cook is because I want to have people react and say, 'Oh, my god, these people have great food and they were the some of the friendliest people I have ever met,'" he says.

The owners of Saucy plan to hold an official grand opening in a couple of months, when the Rockies have their home opener. "We have some marketing ideas we are looking at over the next few months," Torres says. "But we will definitely have something big, and our vendors like Coors, Great Divide and Bud said they would help out, too."
Saucy will probably stay open later during baseball season, but the owners aren't counting on Rockies fans to keep the lights on. "I feel that baseball season is going to be our harvest," says Torres. "We are half a block from Coors Field and game days are going to be crucial -- but this is a residential district, too. Those people are night owls and they are going to keep us afloat as well."
And at all times, food will remain the draw."We aren't really going after the bar crowd," Edwards explains. "Just more of the younger crowd. The name 'Saucy' implies more of the lifestyle and attitude. We define it as being more than sassy, less than cocky and almost crazy."
Right now, Saucy is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (it's closed Sundays). For more information, call 303-295-1775.
