Yazoo BBQ Company could raise the roof on its expansion Friday

Yazoo Barbecue Company has won several Best of Denver awards since Don Hines opened his barbecue joint in a 700 square-foot bunker at 2150 Broadway a decade ago. Since then, Hines has opened a second location an East Arapahoe, and his places are so popular that Yazoo was a finalist in our Best of Denver 2013 Readers' Poll. And soon there will be a lot more to love: Hines managed to buy the corner where his original store sits, and has expanded Yazoo to 4,000 square feet, adding to the kitchen and interior dining area, as well as building a patio and rooftop deck -- which he hopes to get open this Friday. And Yazoo now has a liquor license, so you'll be able to toast the expansion properly.

Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism.
