Michaela Rae

Blues With a Backbone
Hapi Skratch

Should you wait to sing the blues until your voice has changed? That unlikely question is central to this debut by Michaela Rae Knox, who cut Backbone when she was just thirteen. Her guitar playing is plenty solid, if not exactly innovative — unless you've never heard Stevie Ray Vaughan. But the novelty value of her instrumental precocity crumbles when she opens her mouth. Covering Buddy Guy's "Mary Had a Little Lamb" must have seemed like a cute idea, but it's way too cute, like a gag from a Disney Channel sitcom. (Instead of Hannah Montana, how about Hannah Mississippi?) Instrumentals like "Sin Nombre" and, naturally, "SRV Shuffle" are far more diverting than "Trust in You," in which she warbles, "Didn't come to sing/Just came to play." Good plan.

Michaela Ray has exceptional talent, beauty, and apparently some brains too. Personally, I am very impressed that a 14-year-old girl has chosen to display her talent through the blues genre of music, rather than the shallow and mainstream overdone hip-hop Britney Spears type crap. Who are you to dictate what genre of music a 14-year-old girl should be singing? You sound like a bitter and frustrated writer who cant find a real job, and youre taking it out on someone much younger and more talented than you. Your opinion has no relevance.

For being 14 years old, i think she deserves a little more respect than what you gave to her. She could play circles around most guitar players i know and you didn't even give her that.

Ouch! Pretty harsh words for an extremely talented young lady. I hope Michaela does not take this to heart!

Wow, bet you feel like a big man trying to crush a talented 14 year old girl for singing like a 14 year old girl. You are the most mean-spirited, washed-up music critic this town has ever known. For anyone reading this that cares, check out the true talents of Michael Rae at www.myspace.com/michaelaraeguitar and www.michaelarae.bandcamp.com. Michaela is an exceptional musician and killer guitarist who will continue to grow and mature. Reviews like this just goes to show how pathetic and insensitive Michael Roberts is, who obviously gets off beating up a child in the media.
