Forward Thinking

Ivar Zeile of Plus Gallery says it’s a jungle out there right now for independent galleries, but that’s no reason to hunker down and play it too safe. The gallery’s new show, Invincible Cohort, borrows its name from a painting by metaphysical surrealist Giorgio de Chirico, hinting at the unobvious links between the eight local artists participating: Plus Gallery stablemates Bill Amundson, Susan Meyer and Bruce Price, as well as kindred spirits Jason Appleton, Justin Beard, Mary Ehrin, Matt O’Neill and Jeff Starr.

“People seem afraid to go to galleries right now, particularly commercial galleries, but I view this and a lot of our recent endeavors as being more museum-quality and certainly worthy of institutions, except with a focus on Denver artists,” Zeile says. “It's intended to create an experience that everyone can enjoy and take something unique away from, and most importantly have fun.”

Fun will be had at tonight’s opening reception, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Plus, 2501 Larimer Street, where Amundson will DJ and O’Neill will perform some impromptu music; Cohort remains on view through July 3. Go to www.plusgallery.com or call 303-296-0927.
