Dualistics may have found the key to longevity. The only way to stay, as Tyler Despres points out on the aptly titled "Only Way to Stay," is to "fan out," which means leaving your options open without having to directly commit to anything. On Crimson, the band's latest effort and its first recording featuring drummer Nate Barnes, Dualistics traverses the spectrum without ever committing to any one genre: Mixing pop, post-hardcore and indie-rock sensibility with huge and accessible hooks, the players soar and brood on opener "The Optimist" while showing complexity on the sludgy opus "Sabbatical." And as the band plays musical chairs, Despres's vocal style likewise switches from Isaac Slade-like croon to Brandon Boyd with the flick of a tempo change.
