Gallery Sketches: Four shows for the weekend of May 23-25

Any opening at Robischon Gallery always promises an embarrassment of riches, and this quartet of explorations in the natural world will definitely deliver. Can't get enough of Jack Balas in one viewing? Overrride, a solo of his new and recent works, is also up through July 9 at the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design's Rude Gallery.

For a shot of levity, this annual robot-centric open-entry group show will push all your sci-fi buttons and tickle your funny bone, too. Opening and closing receptions will switch this short-lived show on and off this weekend and next.

Light Media: Analog Hinterland 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 24

It's now or never for this one-night display of analog media projections from Christopher Perez, Richard Peterson, Debra Sanders and Dave Seiler, which explores imagery, loops and other moving pictures in Super 8, 16mm and 35mm media. Ken Hamel of denverarts.org curated, and the evening includes an artist talk at 8 p.m., followed by live music by Roger Green at 9.

Icons, paintings by Mark Goodman The MacSpa On view through mid-June Reception: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 25

Sunday afternoon openings aren't typical, but Eric Matelski at the MacSpa made it a real holiday with this exhibition of Mark Goodman's colorful rock and jazz portraits, including a couple that you won't see anywhere else. While you're downtown enjoying ArtStir and the Downtown Denver Arts Festival, Matelski will be slinging chow on the grill, making the MacSpa a perfect place to take a break and chill.
