Gallery Sketches: Three Art Events and Openings in Denver September 25-27

This weekend, you can see art and be art at the Denver Art Museum, immerse yourself in work from a top-notch trio at Robischon Gallery or find out what happens when artists and poets collaborate at Valkarie Gallery in Lakewood.

Robischon Gallery's fall shows branch out to feature three prominent artists working in very different mediums: The team of Kahn + Selesnick, whose staged photographic works, sometimes blended with painting and sculptural elements, tell complex stories in a single shot; sculptor Kim Dickey, who builds forms from tapestries of glazed terracotta shapes; and multimedia artist William Lamson, who explores video in this show. The gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturday; catch this trio through November 7.

The Denver Art Museum's Untitled series is always an adventure, and you never know who you're going to meet as you explore the Hamilton Building, stumbling upon  artist demos, mini-plays, hands-on activities and more on every floor. But September's edition – a last-call ode to the floral-art exhibit In Bloom, which closes October 11 – is jam-packed with amazing items, including installations from DAM resident artists old and new, live music, a “scent-sual” perfume display and more. Current resident group Warm Cookies of the Revolution will debut Vote Every Day, an ongoing participatory installation designed with help from a variety of local artists and creatives that addresses voting and community engagement in civic issues (part of the display includes a Florida voting machine that was used during "hanging chad" election of 2000, courtesy of mega-collector Andrew Novick). Flobots and the bARTer Collective will be in the house, too, to show off Echolation, a collaborative song installation generated during a three-week tour through off-the-beaten-path towns  bARTer will be at the DAM all afternoon today, recording stories and songs from passersby in its mobile studio, so head over there early.

Painter Sharon Eisley and altered-book artist Valerie Savarie will show the results of another kind of collaboration in Ekphrastic, an exhibition of works inspired by several poets, including Lincoln Carr, Nicle Haag, Toni Lefton, Rob Lessig, Drew Myron, Kimberly O'Connor, Rebecca Snow, Colleen Teitgen and Trinity (and, full disclosure: yours truly, as well as Westword contributor Bree Davies). Check out the results at the September 25 reception, but also mark your calendar for the evening of October 10, when the poets will congregate for a reading in the gallery.
