I'm pretty good with languages, particularly on my favorite conversational topics of food, kitchens and cooks. My pronunciation might be embarrassingly bad, but I can say "please," ask after individual ingredients, order, appreciate and offer thanks with a modicum of confidence in German, Russian, French and Vietnamese. In Spanish, I can do a

  • Baker St. Pub moves into former Nine75

Baker St. recreates a British pub in the Denver 'burbs. While other chains contract, Baker St. Pub & Grill has been taking advantage of the economy by snapping up now-empty locations in the metro area. First it took on a Chili's at 1729 28th Street in Boulder; now it's adding the former Nine75 north space at 2831 West 120th Avenue in Westminster, one of the last vestiges of Jim Sullivan's empire-building. Baker St. also has Colorado outposts in Belmar and the Denver Tech Center, as well as se

  • Not-So-New Urbanism: Bradburn Village

Church, steeple, but where are all the people at Bradburn? The Congress for the New Urbanism is holding its annual conference in Denver June 10-14, complete with bus tours of our most well-known new urbanist enclaves. But how do you judge walkable, neighborhood-based developments? Is it by the diversity (or lack thereof) of their residents, the number of parks nearby, their stumbling distance to a local watering hole? Over the next few days, we'll explore and judge -- oh yes, judge -- six of th

  • No smoking at 92nd and Yates in Westminster right now -- unless you feel like exploding

View Larger Map Officials with the Westminster fire and police departments have closed 92nd Avenue between Yates and Raleigh, an area captured in the graphic above (if you have problems seeing the image, click "View Larger Map"), due to a suspected gas leak. In a press release, Westminster Fire Department Captain Dave Sagel is quoted as saying, "We're not going to let people pass through a potentially explosive atmosphere. The street will be closed until we can identify the source of the leak."

  • Westminster gas leak update: Smoke 'em if you got 'em

The gas leak that closed a stretch of 92nd Avenue between Yates and Raleigh in Westminster this morning has been found, according to a new release. As said leak is being repaired, one lane of traffic is being allowed through the area, with more to follow once everything's patched up -- meaning that smoking will return to being a slow way to kill yourself, as opposed to being a sudden, fiery one. Puff with care.

  • This weekend: Raise a pint to the Greater Boulder Beer Festival

It's not quite on the same tap as the Great American Beer Festival, which flows down on Denver on September 24 at the Colorado Convention Center, but the toddler-aged Greater Boulder Beer Festival, which turns two this year, isn't exactly a slacker when it comes to suds. Sure, it's small in stature, and true, you can't sample eight billion beers, but when the festival comes down this Sunday, August 2, at the Millennium Harvest House hotel in Boulder (1345 28th Street), several of Bould

  • Martini Ranch and Hiccups III dry up

The Arizona-based Martini Ranch USA, which owns Martini Ranch clubs in Scottsdale and San Diego, abruptly closed its Denver space at 1317 14th Street at the end of July. "Right now it's in negotiations with the chain ownership and a remodel," Jason Witkes, the venue's marketing coordinator, told Jon Solomon, our clubs editor. We're willing to be it won't reopen as the Martini Ranch, remodeled or not. This space around the corner from Larimer Square, now a hot dining destination, is a valuable p

Lori Midson Ristras Santa Fe Grill, the fast-casual New Mexican joint that opened in March at 11961 Bradburn Boulevard in Westminster, closed last week. And judging from the sign posted on the door, at least a few chile heads who live in the tony 'hood are going to miss the restaurant's thick and spicy green chile. On the upside, Ristas owners Andy and Christina Carter are forging ahead with their catering business and, according to their website,"...looking into bottling some of your favorite
