Bob Holme had a fantasy in mind when he came up with the idea for the Ruby Hill Rail Yard. He pictured some kid tearing up the Winter X Games ten years from now who wouldn’t have otherwise had a chance to start snowboarding. “To me, that would be the ultimate, but it’s been pretty rewarding even after only one year,” he says.

Holme — the terrain park, bike park and youth marketing manager for Winter Park — said last year proved that the resort’s partnership with the City of Denver to create a free urban playground could work. And it’s time to step it up again.

Weather permitting, the park will open today with six rails — beginner to advanced — on an acre of three-feet-deep man-made snow. This season, Musco has donated lights to keep the park aglow until 9 p.m. each night. And Red Bull will help keep the area groomed with its mini-snowcat.

Free lessons and demos are on tap today, with more free lessons and equipment available every Monday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Jibbin’ for the Kids. The rail yard will stay open until the end of February as long as the weather cooperates. Ruby Hill Rail Yard is located between West Florida and West Jewell avenues, and South Platte River Drive and South Quivas Street.
