The 32nd annual Telluride Mountainfilm Festival officially runs May 27-30, but head west early to catch the free outdoor screenings at the Base Camp Outdoor Theater, new this year on the main stage in Telluride Town Park. The first is tonight at 9 p.m. and features director Tom Shadyac’s documentary I Am, one of the hits from last year’s Mountainfilm program.
“We’re taking some of our screenings to Town Park, partly because the outdoor theater seems in line with the spirit of Mountainfilm and partly as a release-valve mechanism,” says Peter Kenworthy, the festival’s executive director. “We’re expecting a capacity crowd this year, and as the festival has grown, we’ve been looking for new ways to accommodate everybody,” says Peter Kenworthy, the fes-tival’s executive director.
That’s a polite way of saying that Front Range film fans should buy their festival passes early at www.mountainfilm.org. Student passes are $50, six-pack punch passes are $140, and full weekend passes start at $280.
“We’ve left some room in the schedule to screen some of the most popular films multiple times, but I would still recommend that peo-ple not wait until the last minute to get tickets, especially if they’re coming over all the way from Denver,” Kenworthy says.
