Zona’s Tamales, the decades-old blue and orange building at 713 East 26th Street, went dark about a month ago, after owner Zona Moore pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of theft by receiving, buying and selling stolen cigarettes.
The Latest Word reported today that Moore’s son, Saalim Muhammed, and another woman, Renee MacKinnon, both employees of the restaurant, also pleaded guilty. They faced one felony count each of theft by receiving — standard punishment for a crime that ranges from two to six years in jail.
As for the pig’s ear sandwich maven herself, Zona Moore will spend her first year of retirement on probation.
