This cup of creamy goodness came delivered right to our door when we called Rooster & Moon, 955 Bannock Street, to inquire about the banana pudding that was making tongues wag around the Westword office. Co-owner Nicholas Bode was sure we’d dig the southern-style dessert that his seven-week-old restaurant was doling out. “It’s my wife’s grandma’s recipe from North Carolina,” he says. “My wife thought it would be fun to whip up a batch, and then it sold out immediately.”

The pudding is a perfect little banana cream pie in a cup. They make it in the evening for the next day and let it sit overnight so the flavors have time to mingle and the Vanilla Wafers circling the cup soften to just the right consistency. The pudding is lighter and airier than your standard Cosby-endorsed snack cup; it’s almost like it’s been crossed with mousse. “We start with a vanilla pudding,” says Bode, “and mix in Cool Whip and two other cream-based products, along with bananas. The recipe’s a secret.”

Really, a secret?

“Okay, I just forget the recipe. My wife knows it.”

Secret recipe or not, this puddin’ (there’s no “g”!) will transport you right back to childhood. The bananas and cream make for a refreshing change from your standard lunchtime sugar rush, but if cookies and other pastries are more your speed, keep an eye out for future housemade treats, alongside some City Bakery creations.

Rooster & Moon’s hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, with happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m. If you become a fan of the restaurant on Facebook today, you’ll be put on a list to score a free jolt of java, which goes great with that innocuous little cup of puddin’.
