Feel the Burn

There’s possibly no better book to discuss at a library than Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury’s prophetic parable about a book-burning society of the future. The novel was an obvious choice for The Big Read, a nationwide initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts to encourage folks to read. And the Arapahoe Library District picked Bradbury’s masterpiece for its own series of Big Read events; added into its month-long roster of events are several screenings of François Truffaut’s excellent film based on the book. Tonight’s kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. at the Bemis Public Library, 6014 South Datura Street in Littleton, with an introduction and commentary by NPR film critic Howie Movshovitz. The 1966 flick, starring Oskar Werner and Julie Christie, is a faithful and gut-wrenching tribute to Bradbury’s vision. For more on Big Read events, visit www.arapahoelibraries.org.
