Eugene O’Neill’s More Stately Mansions might never have seen the light of day: The second (after Touch of the Poet) in a projected cycle of plays following the New England-ensconced Harford family through history, its over-long draft was burned in the fireplace, along with other unfinished works, by the declining O’Neill and his wife, Carlotta, in 1943. But the shrewd Ms. Monterey later included a second draft in her literary gifts to her husband’s archive at Yale University, where it was discovered and later adapted into a finished script by a Swede, Dr. Karl Ragnar Gierow, who first produced the play overseas.
Fittingly, Ed Baierlein of Germinal Stage Denver has chosen, fresh off a run of Poet, to stage it back-to-back with Mansions, which opened for previews Friday. The last economy performance begins tonight at 7 p.m. at the time-honored Germinal, 2450 West 44th Avenue, with a $13 ticket price; the regular run continues on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights through December 16, when admission ranges from $15.75 to $19.75.
