Although Pattern Is Movement often gets lumped in with the whole math-rock phenomenon, the Philadelphia outfit’s sound is much more organic and far less sterile and wanky than that of other groups of that ilk. Avoiding the type of instrumental solos that are more fun to play than listen to, Pattern Is Movement makes the kind of music you’d expect to hear accompanying Catbert as he outlines yet another plan for world domination. What’s more, the act doesn’t switch time signatures with faux-artistic bravado, although many of its progressions do live up to the group’s name by manipulating repetitive patterns within each song. But it’s within that matrix of interacting sound and rhythm that Pattern Is Movement’s unexpectedly affecting pop songs materialize, emerging from the miminalist jazz-inflected lounge framework like a giclée print image.
