While Mustard’s Last Stand, a wiener joint that started in Boulder, is still two decades shy of the 55-year milestone that Taco House celebrated this year, the iconic Chicago-style hot dog institution, which also pimps a location near the University of Denver, is certainly a stalwart, and this weekend, at the Boulder store, the staff is unloading a slew of deals to mark the anniversary.

From noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, the crew, spearheaded by founder Dan Polovin, will dispense 99-cent dogs and free desserts, along with prizes. And on Sunday, August 4, the Denver location will follow suit. “Any retail store or restaurant knows they have more than a good thing going when they’ve been in business 35 years, but Dan still remains so humble about its long-term success,” says PR spokesman Jill Preston. “He’s most comfortable behind the counter serving customers — something he’s been doing since 1978.”
Polovin is best known for his Vienna beef frankfurters — a staple of Chicagoans — served on steamed poppy-seed buns, smeared with yellow mustard and topped with relish, onions, tomatoes, pickles, marinated Serrano peppers and celery salt. And you can bet that they’ll by flying out the door on Sunday.
