PHAMALY continues its inspiring work tonight with Steel Magnolias, performed by the company’s physically and/or developmentally disabled actors. “People who love the movie will not be disappointed,” says spokeswoman Gloria Shanstrom. “All the characters are there, most of the famous quotes are there, the whole ‘love you more than my luggage’ is there.” The major difference between the play and the movie is that the play takes place in Truvy’s Beauty Salon over the course of a day. “The comings and goings of people in the beauty shop is one of the ways the passage of time is marked,” Shanstrom says. “This show was important to us because for once, we can really showcase the female members of the PHAMALY company and do so with a story that is really about love and companionship through good times and bad — despite what is going on in your life. People will walk away from the play feeling more bonded with each other, especially women. It makes you want to care just a little bit more about the people who you care about.”

The show opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Aurora Fox Arts Center, 9900 East Colfax Avenue. Tickets are $24 for general admission and $22 for seniors, students, military and PHAMALY members. For more information, call 303-739-1970 or go to www.phamaly.org.
Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m.; Thu., Jan. 22, 7:30 p.m.; Thu., Jan. 29, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Jan. 9. Continues through Jan. 31, 2009
