Haul out your vintage hankies. Today at 1:30 p.m., the Hiwan Homestead Museum will host a Valentine’s Dessert Tea, where expert Katie Dix will discuss the significance of handkerchiefs through history, and how these inherited keepsakes can tell stories from our grandmothers, great aunts and beyond. She’ll also delve into why certain hankies are collectible, and how to recognize those of value.
Even if you don’t love hankies, the tea will feature various desserts and beverages to enjoy. Museum coordinator Meghan McGinnes shrouds the treats in mystery (possibly with a fine vintage hanky). “I don’t really want to give away any specifics, because our menus are always a surprise for our guests,” she says. “I can say that there will be quite an assortment available for the guests to choose from.”
Registration is required for the event; call 720-497-7650. The suggested donation is $15 for the general public, $12 for Jefferson County Historical Society members, and $12 per person for groups of four or more. The Hiwan House, a seventeen-room log mansion that’s now a museum run by Jefferson County Open Space and the Jefferson County Historical Society, is located at 4208 South Timbervale Drive in Evergreen.
