Q:I’m just starting out cooking, and I want to make some Asian food, especially Thai. But I can’t find a lot of the ingredients in the grocery stores, not even Wild Oats. What do you think is the best place to get Asian ingredients?

A: We’re lucky to have a number of really good places for Asian items. One of my first choices would be Pacific Mercantile in Sakura Square (1925 Lawrence Street; 303-295-0293), which offers a lot of fresh fish, much of it sushi quality, as well as all the funky mushrooms, exotic vegetables (very fresh) and noodles you could need. They also have a great selection of beautiful serving dishes. My other favorite is Mekong (1076 South Federal Boulevard; 303-937-7271), which is more Vietnamese-oriented and features many weird and wonderful deli items. For more specifically Thai foods, I’d head out to Lek’s Asian Market (112 Del Mar Circle, Aurora; 303-366-2429), which has great Thai coffee fixin’s, as well as Thai teas and all of the spices and herbs you’d need.
