Mark Wood is a toothpick of a man, a driven, wild-haired rock star with a Flying V-shaped electric violin (it’s called a Viper, kids). Best known for his gig with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Wood is also a violin maker with his own unique line of guitar-like instruments and a dedicated mentor to young musicians. And it’s in the latter role that he’ll be performing tonight with a special group of Denver School of the Arts orchestra majors, who had the opportunity to work with Woods during a day-long workshop. The concert, Electrify Your Strings, includes a program these kids don’t usually touch, featuring renditions of “Stairway to Heaven,” “Eleanor Rigby” and other tunes from the pop canon, performed by Wood with backup by the DSA musicians. The concert, an orchestra fundraiser, begins at 7 p.m. at the school, 7111 Montview Boulevard; a good time is promised for all. To order tickets, $20, go to http://dsa.dpsk12.org/stories/storyReader$4152.

Tue., Nov. 17, 7 p.m., 2009
